The Code of Maimonides (Mishneh Torah) Book 11, The Book of Torts The five treatises in this eleventh book of the Code of Maimonides are mainly concerned with civil and criminal law. They treat of theft, robbery, lost property, murder, the preservation of life, and damage by chattels. Among the specific topics discussed in these laws relating to the affairs between man and his fellowmen are the amount and mode of compensation for damage to person or property, the fines for theft, punishments for assault and insult, and the laws concerning deliberate or inadvertent murder. This ninth volume in the Yale Judaica Series is thus related in subject to the previously published books of the Code of Maimonides on Acquisition, Civil Law, and Judges. The translator of this volume, an English scholar, is engaged in research in the literary history of Jewish law. The first eleven volumes in the Yale Judaica Series were under the general editorship of Professor Julian Obermann of Yale.
