THE BOOK OF ACQUISITION is Volume V in the Yale Judaica Series in which the fourteen volumes of the Code of Maimonides are being translated from the Hebrew by a group of distinguished scholars under the editorship of Professor Leon Nemoy. This new volume offers the first translation ever made of all the treatises in Book Twelve of the Code. If consists of the following five treatises: The Law of Sales The Law of Gifts The Law of Neighbors The Law of Agents and Partners The Law of Slaves Maimonides' genius as systematizer and codifier is nowhere in the Code more apparent than in his exposition of the complex legal materials embodied in THE BOOK OF ACQUISITION. At the same time, the profound ethos underlying his strictly juridic treatment is nowhere more striking or more constructive than in the present Book. Isaac Klein received his training in Judaica at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America and his Ph.D. degree at Harvard, the translation of THE BOOK OF ACQUISITION having served as his doctoral dissertation.
