Spiritual Horizons

Rabbi Abraham Hecht was the very beloved rabbi who served as one third of the triumvirate that led Congregation Shaare Zion on Ocean Parkway in Brooklyn NY. In those memorable and formative years, Shaare Zion served as the core synagogue of the Syrian Jewish Community. Rabbi Hecht was with Rabbi Baruch Ben Haim, and Rabbi Shaul / Saul Kassin, - the son in law and son, respectively of the previous Chief Rabbi, Jacob Kassin, who served the community from its days at the Synagogue on 67th Street in Bensonhurst. That shul continues to have a roll in the community, with many funerals taking place there over the past 70 or so years. The Community itself now has many clusters of its members in Deal NJ, Lakewood NJ, scattered about in Manhattan, and in Aventura, Fla., as well as other US States, South American countries, Israel and Europe. Along with its many other attributes and distinctions, the "SY" Community is well known for its unique Kosher Middle Eastern based cuisine, its strong presence in the local business and real estate environment, and its close knit private lifestyles, focused on family, Torah, and education.
