This work considers two subjects: first, it examines one of the most ancient Jewish acts, acquiring a cemetery plot; and secondly, it deals with one of the oldest elements in the American-Jewish communal structure, the burial society. In a critique of secularization theory, the book provides information on the history of the Jewish burial society, its role in the contemporary world, and its function in a highly secular society.
