Until modern times, the way of life that was accepted in Jewish society did not allow for many opportunities for social contact between the sexes. The different occupations of members of both sexes, the young age of marriage, as well as the sexual morality that was accepted in traditional society, created maximum social gender segregation. However, the existence of negative phenomena in the ways of behavior of members of both sexes, at different times and places, has not been completely prevented. The protests and warnings of the sages of the generations against the existence of these acts are documented in books of ethics, and especially in the literature of questions and answers (responsa (responsa).
In recent generations, there have been changes in the way of life of Jewish society. Women's equal involvement and participation in various areas of life has become one of the cornerstones of modern society. In most areas, members of both sexes meet frequently, and women's place in public life is not absent either.
The question that has confronted the spiritual leaders of traditional Judaism since the beginning of the new era, and which continues to be relevant today, perhaps even more than in the past, is: Is it possible to combine modern life with the values of Jewish heritage? And in our case, is it possible to maintain a mixed society that also preserves Jewish values of morality and modesty?
This book is an adaptation of a doctoral research paper done in the Department of Talmud at Bar Ilan University. It reviews the history of the prohibition of gender mixing, from biblical sources, rabbinic literature, and up to the responsa books of recent generations. The book deals with the factors that helped formulate the prohibition, and examines the extent to which it has been applied in Jewish social life throughout the generations.
The purpose of the book is to clarify the extent to which the issue of gender segregation is anchored in Jewish law. This issue has had an impact on the status of women in society and the degree of their involvement in public life. The halakhic position on the question of gender segregation is reinforced in the modern era, in light of the many changes that have taken place in general and Jewish society.
The book discusses the question of gender mixing in the following areas: the synagogue, religious worship, the formal and informal education system, leadership roles and public activity, social activity, and leisure time. .
