THE BOOK OF OFFERINGS is Volume IV in the Yale Judaica Series in which the fourteen volumes of the Code of Maimonides are being translated from the Hebrew by a group of distinguished scholars under the editorship of Leon Nemoy. This new volume offers the first trans� lation ever made of all the treatises in Book Nine of the Code. It consists of the following six treatises: Laws concerning Passover Offering Laws concerning the Festal Offering Laws concerning Firstlings Laws concerning Offerings fir Transgressions Committed through Error Laws concerning Those Whose Atonement is Not Complete Laws concerning Substituted Offerings Those offerings are first described which must be brought at specified times in the year: A further scheme in the sequence would seem to he that of giving precedence to what is of concern to the greatel- number. Thus every Israelite. male or female, was bound to keep the Passover. whereas no obligation to bring the festal offerings rested on women and bondsmen: and only the class which owned flocks and herds was affected by the laws of firstlings and tithe of cattle. The subject of the fourth treatise concerned only an indefinite number of persons at uncertain times, while only (our groups of persons times the subject of tile fifth treatise.
