When still a child, Rabbi Vorst was imprisoned in a concentration camp, where he lost his mother and an infant brother. In 5736/1976 one of his children was killed in a car accident. Rabbi Vorst then attempted to put into writing his feelings of mourning and grief, and the thoughts that followed brought him to the conclusion that a Jew should always try to sing, even in sorrow. At the insistence of friends, he agreed to have his reflections published (in his native Dutch), and the booklet proved to be of great comfort and solace to many in the days when they mourned the loss of a loved one. In view of the reception accorded the original publication in Holland, the author has now prepared this edition, in the belief that it will equally fill a deep need in English-speaking Jewry.
