Product Description
This edition of Hebrew Ethical Wills is a facsimile reissue in paperback of the long out of print original 1926 edition, published by JPS in the series, the Schiff Library of Jewish Classics. The present volume is-part of the ongoing effort to make the Schiff texts available to a new generation of readers and students. The testaments gathered together in this collection include specimens, either complete texts or extracts, that are representative of the type of literature known as ethical wills. The practice of composing testamentary directions for religious and secular guidance of children would seem to be a peculiarly Jewish custom, which can be traced back to the Bible. The custom has had a long and continuous history in Jewish literature, constituting, as Judah Goldin notes in a new Foreword to the present edition, "a refraction of the whole Jewish moralistic expression." Among the documents to be found here are Judah ibn Tibbon's admonition to his children, the "Gate of Instruction" attributed to Maimonides, a guide to knowledge by Joseph ibn Kaspi, the testament of Israel Baal Shem Toy, and the letter of Elijah, Gaon of Vilna, to his heirs. Together they afford an intimate insight into the personal religion of Jews in various times and places, as well as demonstrating the abiding Jewish concern with right-thinking and right-doing.
