Product Description
No one can participate intelligently in the current halachic discussions within world Jewry whether these concern proselytization, who is a Jew, or microphones in a synagogue without an insight into the workings ofJewish Law; how the halachah views its own origin and how it evolved in Rabbinic times; how the sages of old created and developed the Law and how they applied it in changing circumstances. Mr. H. Chaim Schimmel, a lawyer versed in both Talmudic and Secular Law, aims in this work to be comprehensible on these topics to the non- expert rather than original to the scholar. He aims to establish a base forthe reader from which he can obtain a view of the entire spectrum of Rabbinic Law. From this point of vantage, he presents in the final two chapters of this book a stimulating and original viewpoint on two controversial scholarly topics Legal Fictions in Jewish Law and the Development of the Mishnah. THE AUTHOR H. Chaim Schimmel has been concerned with Jewish Education throughout his adult life. He was a co-founder and Chairman of the Hovevey Torah adult educational movement together with Professor Cyril Domb. He is Chairman of Yeshiva Etz Chaim and Convenor of the A.O.J.S. Speakers Panel to British Universities. A lawyer by profession, he practises in the City of London and a1 weekends conducts a regular Talmudic study group. He was educated at the Mesifta Talmudic Col- lege, London, and later graduated at the London School of Economics. He is married and has two sons and a daughter.
