KAUFMANN, ISIDOR 1832-1894. (FRAME NOT INCLUDED) Hungarian painter destined for a commercial career, and could fulfill his wish to become a painter only later in life. In 1875 he went to the “Landes-Zeichenschule” in Budapest, where he remained for one year. In 1 876 he went to Vienna, but being refused admis- sion to the Academy of Fine Arts there, he became a pupil of the portrait-painter Aigner. He then en- tered the “malerschule” of the Vienna Academy, and later became a private pupil of Professor Trenkwald. He traveled in Galicia, Poland and the Ukraine from one village to another making sketches. Kauf- mann’s painting’s illustrate subjects of everyday Jewish life. His genre paintings have infinite charm and are executed with taste and skill. At the same time his paintings are of considerable historical and religious value as they document the Shtetl and the Shtibl (small synagogue). He was an extremely cultured observer who saw to reproduce every nuance of the people and scenes he painted. Kaufmann was the recipient of numerous prizes and awards. Emperor Franz Joseph presented one of his paintings to the Vienna Museum of Fine Art. AVAILABLE IN THE SERIES ARE 8 FULL COLOR LITHOGRAPHS.
